HPV Vaccine

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccination

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is responsible for at least 90% of all cervical cancer. Cervical cancer can be very serious and around 1000 women die from it each year in the UK. The vaccine protects against the two types of the virus that cause most of the cases of cervical cancer (70% or more) and involves three injections being given at set intervals over several months.

Females aged 12-16 will be vaccinated through their school nurse. This programme will commence in September 2008, with girls aged 12-13 (born 1.9.95-31.8.96). Girls aged 14 – 16 years will be offered the vaccination in 2009 / 2010. This vaccination is now part of the national immunisation programme.

All females aged 17-18 (born 1.9.90-31.8.91) will also be vaccinated from September 2008, but as a significant number may have already left school, vaccinations will be provided by the patient’s registered GP practice.

All females (born 1.9.90 - 31.8.91) that require an appointment can telephone the surgery on 0844 499 6932 to book an appointment time. All vaccinations will be administered by our trained nurses, who can also answer any questions you may have.

Please note: We are currently only able to vaccinate females born between 1.9.90 - 31.8.91, who will have all received a letter inviting them to attend for immunisation.
